Welcome to the Coatesville Dems Blog

Public Corruption in Chester County, PA

I believe an unlikely mix of alleged drug trafficking related politicos and alleged white nationalist related politicos united to elect the infamous “Bloc of Four” in the abysmal voter turnout election of 2005. During their four year term the drug business was good again and white nationalists used Coatesville as an example on white supremacist websites like “Stormfront”. Strong community organization and support from law enforcement, in particular Chester County District Attorney Joseph W. Carroll has begun to turn our community around. The Chester County drug trafficking that I believe centers on Coatesville continues and I believe we still have public officials in place that profit from the drug sales. But the people here are amazing and continue to work against the odds to make Coatesville a good place to live.

Something that never happened in Coatesville: ”Her campaign focused on turning those voters, particularly African Americans, who were less likely to cast ballots in a Democratic primary.”

Forget the big corporate cash of Chuck Schumer & Nancy Pelosi, this is how Democrats take back Congress & Senate:

“Shortly after the win, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted her support: ‘Let’s push together to make Medicare for All, tuition free college, & living wages a reality in America - all without corporate PAC money.”

However, Capuano still had strong support from organized labor, Boston mayor Marty Walsh as well as the Congressional Black Caucus’s political action committee.

The Congressional Black Caucus Political Action Committee that supported Ayanna Pressley’s opponent is in bed with corporate cash.

Insurgent challenger will be state’s first black female member of Congress

WASHINGTON — When the Congressional Black Caucus wanted to pay off the mortgage on its foundation’s stately 1930s redbrick headquarters on Embassy Row, it turned to a familiar roster of friends: corporate backers like Wal-Mart, AT&T, General Motors, Coca-Cola and Altria, the nation’s largest tobacco company.

Soon enough, in 2008, a jazz band was playing at what amounted to a mortgage-burning party for the $4 million town house.

Most political groups in Washington would have been barred by law from accepting that kind of direct aid from corporations. But by taking advantage of political finance laws, the caucus has built a fund-raising juggernaut unlike anything else in town...

“From 2004 to 2008, the Congressional Black Caucus’s political and charitable wings took in at least $55 million in corporate and union contributions, according to an analysis by The New York Times, an impressive amount even by the standards of a Washington awash in cash. Only $1 million of that went to the caucus’s political action committee; the rest poured into the largely unregulated nonprofit network. (Data for 2009 is not available.)…

But few of these alliances have paid off like the caucus’s connection to rent-to-own stores.

Some Democrats in Congress have tried to limit fees charged to consumers who rent televisions or appliances, with critics saying the industry’s advertisements prey on low-income consumers, offering the short-term promise of walking away with a big-screen TV while hiding big long-term fees. Faced with rules that could destroy their business, the industry called on the caucus.

In 2007, it retained Zehra Buck, a former aide to Representative Bennie Thompson, Democrat of Mississippi and a caucus member, to help expand a lobbying campaign. Its trade association in 2008 became the exclusive sponsor of an annual caucus foundation charity event where its donated televisions, computers and other equipment were auctioned, with the proceeds going to scholarships. It donated to the campaigns of at least 10 caucus members, and to political action committees run by the caucus and its individual members.

It also encouraged member stores to donate to personal charities run by caucus members or to public schools in their districts. Mr. Clay, the Missourian, received $14,000 in industry contributions in 2008 for the annual golf tournament his family runs in St. Louis. The trade association also held a fund-raising event for him in Reno, Nev.

“I’ll always do my best to protect what really matters to you,” Mr. Clay told rent-to-own executives, who agreed to hold their 2008 annual convention in St. Louis, his home district. Mr. Clay declined a request for an interview.

On a visit to Washington, Larry Carrico, then president of the rent-to-own trade association, offered to donate computers and other equipment to a nonprofit job-training group in Chicago named in honor of Mr. Davis, the Illinois congressman who in 2002 voted in favor of tough restrictions on the industry.

Mr. Davis switched sides. Mr. Carrico traveled to Chicago to hand over the donations, including a van with “Congressman Danny K. Davis Job Training Program” painted on its side, all of which helped jump-start a charity run by Lowry Taylor, who also works as a campaign aide to Mr. Davis.

In an interview, Mr. Carrico said support from caucus members came because they understood that his industry had been unfairly criticized and that it provided an important service to consumers in their districts.

While some caucus members still oppose the industry, 13 are co-sponsors of the industry-backed legislation that would ward off tough regulatory restrictions — an alliance that has infuriated consumer advocates.

“It is unfortunate that the members of the black caucus who are supporting this bill did not check with us first,” said Margot Saunders, a lawyer with the National Consumer Law Center. “Because the legislation they are supporting would simply pre-empt state laws that are designed to protect consumers against an industry that rips them off.”

The industry’s own bill, introduced by a caucus member, has not been taken up, but it does not really matter because the move to pass stricter legislation has ground to a halt.

“Without the support of the C.B.C.,” John Cleek, the president of the rent-to-own association, acknowledged in an industry newsletter in 2008, “our mission in Washington would fail.”

Student loan corruption began, where else,? PENNSYLVANIA

“Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA), which would eventually branch off and create FedLoan.” ...

(After all, if you’re a servicer on a loan you guarantee, you might as well just let the loan default, and then you get to do the highly lucrative work of collecting it.)

‘The most important thing to remember’ about the federal student loan program, he said, ‘is borrowers are not the customer. Borrowers are the product.”

“ Even before it created FedLoan, there was plenty of reason to believe that PHEAA’s priorities were askew. In 2007, investigations by news outlets, including the Patriot-News, based near PHEAA’s Harrisburg headquarters, revealed the agency had given out $2.5 million in bonuses to executives that year and had spent almost $1 million between 2000 and 2005 on board retreats that included $150 cigars and falconry lessons. Then-CEO Richard Willey made nearly $500,000 in 2007: His $181,000 bonus that year was more than the governor’s salary. Amid this criticism, Willey resigned.

That same year, PHEAA was sued by Jon Oberg, a former Education Department researcher who accused it and eight other state and nonprofit lenders and guarantee entities of intentionally overcharging the government. In PHEAA’s case, this allegedly amounted to $116.5 million between 2002 and 2006. All the agencies were caught up in the scandal, a former Education Department official who asked not to be named told me, but PHEAA was “particularly bad.” In December 2017, PHEAA was acquitted of defrauding the department; the verdict is on appeal. (The others named in the suit settled or had their cases dismissed.)”

Beto O'Rourke on NFL Players Kneeling During the National Anthem

"O’Rourke, who is challenging Republican Senator Ted Cruz in Texas, talked in his lengthy response about Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) and other American activists whose past protests raised awareness and prompted change. “Non-violently, peacefully, while the eyes of this country are watching these games, they take a knee to bring our attention and our focus to this problem to ensure that we fix it,”

O’Rourke said of the players. “That is why they are doing it. And I can think of nothing more American than to peacefully stand up, or take a knee, for your rights, any time, anywhere, in any place.”"

Coatesville 2nd Century Alliance Community Meeting at Coatesville Senior Center August 8 2018 - Coatesville Construction Timeline

Sonia Huntzinger and Linda Norris speaking:

REALIGNMENT OF INTERSECTION OF LINCOLN HIGHWAY AND 1ST AVENUE

The intersection of 1st Avenue and Lincoln Highway is slated for construction to begin at the end of August -begining of September 2018. They’re going to realign the intersection to make it more pedestrian friendly and easier to navigate from a vehicular perspective. Construction will take place over the winter and be completed in the Spring of 2019.

GATEWAY PROJECTS

Gateway Projects construction is probably slated for Spring of 2019. He is still working on the financing package.

He (Jim DePetris, CEO of Legend Properties) has every intention of starting the rehabilitation of the Cultural Society building. We are in an application process for an economic development liquor license for that building. As soon as we get word that has been approved they’ll bring in a sports bar. Soliciting a sports bar franchise for that building.

We are also working actively with him to recruit a dining option, some sort of fine dining for the bank building. So the developer owns the bank building.

STREETSCAPES

We are working with city engineers to design a new streetscape for Lincoln Highway from 1st Avenue to hopefully 4th Avenue but probably 3rd Avenue. That will include sidewalk trees. We’re hoping that construction will commence next year.

Third Avenue will be completed in the next couple of months. You’ll see the striping on the street. You’ll see the striping on the Olivet Methodist Church Parking Lot.  That will soon be open to commuters.  To use the train station.

The Department of Community Development has awarded us funds to make some improvements to the historic train station building. We’re going to clean that up. Put some fo window panels on it as we finish 3rd Avenue.

We are rolling into 4th Avenue streetscape improvements. The new train station is planned for the corner of 4th Avenue and Fleetwood. We got 2 streetscapes out of the deal. We have the new streetscape on 3rd Avenue and by the end of next year we will have the 4th Avenue streetscape done.

We’ve also received some funds from the Department of Community Development at Chester County to extend the streetscape improvements south on 3rd Avenue. Now with the new city hall we’ll have a new streetscape on 3rd Avenue from Fleetwood Street to Harmony Street.

TRAIN STATION

Third Avenue will be completed this year, 4th next year and we are still working with PENDOT on the design of the platform. Not an if. It’s a when.

THE FLATS

There is a proposal for a multi-use sports facility. This is a multi-sport indoor and outdoor field and court that would attract sporting competition. Volley ball, basketball, cheerleading from all over the Mid-Atlantic. Right now it’s in negotiation for the land and the Redevelopment Authority which owns the Flats.

The city is proposing an amphitheater for Gateway Park at the intersection of Lincoln Highway and 1st Avenue.

If you were at the meeting you might want to listen to the whole thing, or mostly the whole thing. I got there about 10 minutes late:

Thursday, August 9, 2018

I asked for protection. I was told “We won’t let anything happen to you.” I worked with an intelligence officer.

I sent a message that I was coming out of the now Jefferson Station on my way to the PA Eastern District Courthouse. She wrote back “I know.”

That was back in 2008.  Before the massive Russian cyber attacks.

“My” intelligence officer connection went dark on the day Jeff Sessions took office as Attorney General. But I’m sure the links to me are still in effect.

What’s different now is I think not only US intelligence knows were I am all the time. I think Russian intelligence has the same information.
