Radiation poisoning would kill the remaining life of the Northern Hemisphere in a few months. A decade of darkness would starve to death most, probably all, people left alive in the Southern Hemisphere.

Most people, such as the “preppers”, that assume nuclear war is survivable is based on information from the nuclear attacks in Japan. Stories of Japanese jumping into boiling water to escape flames are unrealisticly optimistic in modern thermonuclear war.
