Good journalism lives

"The Soloist" will be on HBO a while longer. You can always get it from the library.

A minister friend of ours, Dr. John Shetler and his wife had heart breaking experiences with a daughter who struggled with schizophrenia.

We knew people with the disease, their lives destroyed by it. A pretty young woman who we know was seeing some apparition when she looked at the floor. Meeting a once productive man from West Mt. Airy on the street, a barely recognizable remnant of his former self.

The healing power of music.

Sitting 10 rows back from the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Academy of Music. The floor the skin of a drum that sounded a low G resonating through your soul. Transported to a spiritual place.

I looked forward to reading Steve Lopez' column from back when the Philly Inquirer had a staff.

Good journalism lives.
