PHILADELPHIA — A federal grand jury on St. Patrick's Day added charges to the case against Sean O'Neill Sr., the Irish-born father of a Willistown teenager who shot and killed his friend during a party at the family's home.
The indictment released Tuesday alleges O'Neill entered into a "sham marriage" to obtain his green card to stay in the United States after coming here from Northern Ireland and that he later lied to authorities about being a U.S. citizen.
Federal authorities had already accused O'Neill of staying here illegally without informing authorities of his involvement with an IRA subgroup.
O'Neill had been scheduled to stand trial on weapons charges in May in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia. It was not immediately clear what the new charges would do to that court date.
According to the superceding indictment, O'Neill, 49, was born in Coalisland, Northern Ireland. He came to the U.S. when he was 23 after having served time in a Northern Ireland prison for his involvement with Fianna na h'Eireann, a youth group associated with the IRA."
